91301: A Cultural Experience

ANIMATED WEEKEND FUN AT REYES ADOBE DAYS

Celebrating California culture, the Reyes Adobe Days (RAD) festival offered the very best in Socal entertainment–past and present–from learning to write with a quill pen to professionally drawn animation.  Celebrity Grand Marshall was Cinco Paul, writer and producer of the Despicable Me features. Featured artist for the Art@theAdobe gallery was Butch Hartman, creator of the Nickelodeon hit series The Fairly Oddparents. To the delight of the crowd, a minion joined in the fun of photo ops with the celebrities.

During the free Day at the Adobe festival, families played, ate and shopped on the grounds of the Reyes Adobe, an original 1845 California rancho. Kids were entertained with various hands-on rancho activities (pony rides, petting zoo, scrubbing laundry, and writing with quill pens were among the many activities).  Live music during the weekend included Salsa dance music with Tease, Mojomaster’s rhythm and blues, jazz bands and a headlining tribute to Credence Clearwater. Strolling musicians also played period music on the adobe grounds. A new Farmhouse tent was a successful addition to the 2014 festival, featuring local artisans and the Ladyface Alehouse saloon.

George Valdez who grew up next door to the Reyes family paid a visit, sharing stories on what it was like living in Agoura Hills in the 1930s.

The Art@theAdobe gallery presented by the Agoura Hills Cultural Arts Council displayed animation art from both Hartman’s and Paul’s blockbuster productions. Internet media Crack-Duck creator Danny Lucy, an Agoura Hills High graduate, was also featured in the gallery along with schoolmate Evan Lewis who works with him on the show. In a special presentation on Saturday, Butch drew caricatures to help raise funds for local art programs.

The festival’s Night at the Adobe signature art event connected the community to a range of local talent in the 91301 area. Over 350 guests met artists and artisans sampling regional cuisine, wine and beer while kicking off the Reyes Adobe Days weekend festival. The great weather and October moon no doubt contributed to bringing out the record crowd for a memorable evening.

Other events in conjunction with the festival was a Senior Fiesta, which was a sell out this year, the 10Miler and 10K RAD runs through Agoura Hills’s scenic outback, the RAD parade leading to the weekend festival, and a gymkhana celebrating the city’s equestrian roots. RAD was presented by the City of Agoura Hills, the city’s Cultural Arts Council and partner business sponsor Camp Bow Wow Agoura Hills. Reyes Adobe Days will return next year to share 91301’s rich, cultural diversity with the region.
